This is a hidden gem!!! The food is unique not the same old menu at other asian rest. presented to perfection. Freshly made dishes that are a treat!! This is a must if your in the area, limited seating so call ahead. Sushiya is a new word for great sushi.

We're Oyama (Iowa City) die-hards, but I expect we're going to find excuses to come to Sushiya anytime we're within a 5 mile radius. We ordered shumai and edamame for appetizers, some nigiri, and a few of the more traditional maki rolls. I don't know what "authentic" shumai is supposed to be/taste like, but Sushiya's is different from Oyama and I like Oyama's better. I didn't personally eat the edamame but our little one did and she enjoyed it. The nigiri and maki were just outstanding. The rice was cooked absolutely perfectly. We've done some sushi-rice cooking at home and, after that experience with small batches, we have real respect for people that can pull it off so well in restaurant quantities. Sushiya probably does a better job of it than anywhere I've had in the corridor. The other ingredients were just amazing. The raw was extremely fresh and the cooked was perfectly prepared. What Sushiya really gets right is the balance of flavors in each maki. The ice cream that came as a complement to my nigiri dinner was also fantastic. I recommend that you ask your server for his or her favorites. We were pointed to a couple of things that we might not have thought to try and were very favorably impressed. We didn't try anything from the more fusion-type maki selection but judging by what we did get, I suspect that the fusion must be excellent. This would be a good "gateway" restaurant for all of those friends of yours that just aren't quite sure about sushi yet. The other amazing thing about Sushiya is the phenomenal service. I really can't say enough good things about the way that we were greeted and treated from beginning to end. As for kids, there's not much here that's "American-y" enough if your kids are the PB/J or hot dogs or mac-n-cheese types, but it's not really any different from most other Asian restaurants. However, they really did treat my hungry and tired little one wonderfully, so to say this place isn't kid-friendly would be an absolute lie.

I love Sushiya! It is about time there was a really legit sushi place in the area! The staff here is fantastic, the prices are excellent and the variety is very appropriate. All too often, we've been to a sushi spot that attempts to be "pan-asian" and serve Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Here, they do primarily Sushi, with a little dabbling into different types of noodles. A few Chinese dishes speckle the menu and are also very good. We've been here 5 or 6 times now and have never been disappointed. The sushi is always excellent and they're often trying new things. If you ask the servers about some of the rolls they're demoing, they may be able to hook you up. For starter, we've fallen in love with the Korokke - It's a Japanese dish that will remind you of a cross between a falafel, curry and a hash brown. The sauce that it comes with (Tonkatsu I think) is incredible and compliments it very well. We've had the Udon noodles a few times and it goes perfect with a couple rolls. The spider rolls is lovely, the salmon skin and spicy salmon are classics and the tempura was delicious. In total, we've tried 10-12 of the rolls and all have been fabulous. The sushi chefs are money and the rolls they're putting together are as good as anything we've had on either coast. My favorite beer here has become the "Laughing Budda". It comes in a delightful green bottle and is a pretty standard lager. There are a couple other Japanese beers available if you fancy. As mentioned, the physical room within the place is relatively limited, but they move folks in and out quick enough that there's generally not a huge wait. Total icing on the cake - every time we come through they make fancy oranges for our little dude Overall, this place is a gem. The service is great and the food is fantastic. After trying it once, it became our go to spot for sushi. Worth trying and coming back often!

Sushi in Iowa is a gamble. Doubly so for sushi in North Liberty. Fortunately, I've had luck eating at Sushiya. They seem to pick good fish, know how to cook their rice and do an excellent job of supplementing their menu with some really tasty items such as korokke (a mashed potato/meat croquette) and what has to be the best yam tempura in the IC area.

My boyfriend and I checked this place on Monday night. Oyama is our go to restaurant for sushi. We love that place, and I think as far as the rolls Oyama is still my preferred place. Sushiya was great though. I really liked that you could order sashimi a la cart. And the sashimi was cut perfectly. I also ordered my go to spicy tuna hand roll. It was good, with a healthy serving of tuna, but I'll order mine extra spicy next time. We also ordered the spider roll (which a barely got a piece of because my bf loved it), and the Manhattan roll - which was good. Overall the sushi was great. The service was prompt and friendly. But I may have to try more rolls next time to see if they can beat Oyama for my favorite rolls (which will be very difficult). My bf however thinks he likes Sushiya more. Guess we will have to battle it out when we want sushi in the future.

Service was good. We went around 7:30 and got sat after 2 minutes or so. Ordered the crabmeat rangoon to start- those were awesome! I wish they would give more dipping sauce though. Next, we got teriyaki chicken. That was great too, but there was not enough veggies in my opinion. I want more! We also got 2 sushi rolls- the spicy tuna crunch maki and shrimp tempura maki. Both great, I loved the shrimp tempura more, but just need to put some spicy mayo not he tuna roll and it's good to go! Love this place, will go all the time!

Anyone driving along 1-80 at Iowa City should drive a few miles extra to North Liberty and dine at this gem. There is nothing I can add to the other wonderful reviews offered up on this page so I'll just echo that it is a five star experience in every way and more than worth the drive.

Outstanding restaurant! We were looking for a place to eat lunch on the way to the airport, and saw the reviews. Decided to give it a try. Fresh, tasty, authentic Japanese food after a week of fried, terrible Midwest food. We are used to good Japanese food in the Bay Area and Japan, and Sushiya did not disappoint. We were thrilled with our bento boxes, the service, the decor, the attentiveness of the owner. We highly recommend.

Definitely the best Japanese restaurant in the coralville iowa city north liberty area. We went yesterday evening and ordered the sushi for 2. For that price it came with apps and a dessert! Such a deal! If you're looking for the Americanized cream cheese type of sushi with low grade fish, try the ones in coralville. If you're looking for HIGH QUALITY food that's authentic to Japan, come here. The chefs are also mostly Japanese unlike the other restaurants in town.

What a pleasant surprise! If only it weren't in the suburban wasteland that is North Liberty. I feel like most things have been covered by other reviewers: good, fresh fish, good service, good side dishes, good prices. And I mean, sure, perhaps in a major city this would be "only" 4 stars, but this isn't just "good for Iowa," this place is good, period. Anyone who says they don't have enough variety only knows "sushi" from the kinds of places that serve bastardized, overloaded rolls. This place has more than enough variety to warrant multiple visits.

I listen to Yelp but I've never written a review. My background includes 30 plus sushi restaurants in Chicago..Seattle..Portland..San Diego..iowa. Many of them several times...(Sunda more than several) Sushiya...nothing compares. that might sound over the top but really....just go.. The service is beyond anything in Iowa. Perhaps the midwest. You are just not used to being attended to with such appreciation to timing and place in a meal. The Chefs... this is the best part...I could spend the better part of an afternoon..and I have.. in simple appreciation of their knife skills and presentation. The sushi is so so fresh...wait...this is the best. The sake selection...oh...the sake. Go.

Fantastic food and service! We will definitely return. The four of us started with appetizers, hot and sour soup, sushi, squid salad and finished with two entries, one with delicious eggplant, and finally the udon noodles with chicken. This is a rather small restaurant and quiet so we were able to enjoy a delicious meal and conversation. Highly recommend!

Hands down, the best sushi in Eastern Iowa. I'd love to say all of Iowa but I haven't tested the waters with sushi in Des Moines yet but judging by a lot of the other reviews, it's probably safe to say that it really is the best in Iowa. The food is so fresh, and the presentation is absolutely beautiful. Experiencing Sushi on the East coast, sushi just wasn't ever the same after returning to Iowa but Sushiya really is something special! Excellent staff, quiet and comfortable dining and very clean facility. I recommend Sushiya every time.

Was a bit reluctant to try sushi in Iowa, but I must say this place was really good. Everything we ordered had good flavor, tasted fresh, the menu has a lot of options, and the service was good. The prices seemed reasonable for a sushi joint. We will definitely be back for more!

This place was phenomenal! After having quite a few disappointing sushi experiences in the area, we weren't sure that this place was worth trying. I'm very glad we went. They have a beautiful outdoor space in the back, the food was great, but what really blew us away was the service. It was probably some of the best service we've ever had at a restaurant. I take off one star because there are a few things on the menu that they didn't quite execute, like the pad thai. My fault for ordering it at a sushi place. Stick to the sushi and you'll have a great meal!

Great service from the staff here! They are very friendly and attentive with their service. I like a place where the staff is genuine and passionate about their restaurant. I had the spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls, both were made perfect and the quality of fish was great. Had a small bowl of miso soup as well, yummy as always. They have a good sized selection in sushi and entrees that include Japanese and Chinese style dishes, prices are very reasonable as well. So you will most likely be able to find a dish for everyone here. I really enjoyed my lunch here, doesn't take too long to get in and out. If you are in the area this is a great option for quality Asian cuisine

First, let me start by saying that the food here is awesome. I've been coming to Sushiya every other week since I first tried it in February. I always get two rolls of sushi, and have never been disappointed with the food. However, the service could definitely use some improvement. I came in for lunch yesterday, by myself, looking to enjoy a quiet meal and read my book. It took several minutes for me to be seated, which is pretty typical. It then took another five minutes before the server finally came over to greet me and take my order. I had to repeat myself multiple times, which is pretty frustrating. I could tell that the server had several other tables, but she wasn't moving with any sort of hurry, at all. I always let the server know that I just want to be left alone to read my book, but the server yesterday thought it was necessary to interrupt my reading so she could put down my water. Not only was that totally unnecessary, but it was infuriating that it happened so soon after I asked for 'silent service'. When the food arrived, she interrupted me again, so I went ahead and asked for my check. When she finally brought the check, I immediately put my card on it, and went back to reading, but she interrupted me again to hand the the stick of gum that they give out. First off, I have braces, so gum isn't even an option for me, but even if it was, she could leave it on the freaking table. My water glass was empty at this point, and she had even brought the water pitcher with her, but then said "Oh, it was no ice" and left. This would have been fine if she had brought another water with her when she dropped off my card, but she didn't. At this point, I was so irritated that I quickly finished my meal and left. I have had enjoyable service here before, but it's on the rare occasion that I get a server who understands me. Overall, the staff has no ability to read the guests, and is way too overly attentive. Even if I didn't want to read, I would be annoyed with the number of people who check on the table, and the frequency of those visits. On a visit two months ago, I had someone checking on me every five minutes. That's not an exaggeration. Like I said, the food here is awesome, but I'm at the point where it's just not worth it anymore. I want to be able to relax on my lunch break, not be constantly bombarded.

Great service, you feel like the whole restaurant is taking care of you! The sushi itself is very delicious. It's has a great location in the heart of North Liberty! The prices are on par with most sushi bars in the area. There are plenty of $5-$8 rolls to choose from, as well as some more elaborate rolls ranging from $12 -$15. The soft shell crab appetizer is great. I have been there twice, and its a nice hidden gem. It's a smaller establishment, (a Quiznos used to be in that location), so it fills up fast. You are able to make reservations, so I suggest taking advantage of that. Great food, great atmosphere, reasonable pricing.

Oh man! What a great restaurant. I, too, am a little cautious about seafood in the Midlands (I grew up in Alaska, okay?), but I just had a stellar dinner here, no "not bad for iowa" equivocation about it. My partner and I shared several rolls and an appetizer, a filling and diverse meal at a very affordable price. The restaurant is set up in such a way that it doesn't get too loud for conversation (confirmed by my date, who had been here before on a much busier night and is very sensitive to noisy spaces), and our service was fantastic. Waitress Brittany was friendly and knowledgeable, prompt, visited at the right times, made us feel welcome, and kept us and our order in mind, and other members of the staff we interacted with incidentally showed the same level of attention and focus. We both had a pretty bad day to end our weeks, so the quiet space and delicious food were a really welcome wrap up. We'll definitely be visiting again, even if I don't have a lot of other business in North Liberty most of the time (I'm in Iowa City). Way worth it.

Probably the best of the area. Try it and tell your friends -- this place rocks. I had the crab rangoons (really really good) Honey Roll, Spicy tuna and veggie roll. All were awesome.

Amazing service from the most excited staff I've ever seen. If you can, sit right where the sushi is made. The guy that made our food looked like he loved his job, constantly smiling and talking in an upbeat fashion. This was my wife's first experience with raw fish sushi, and she is now a huge fan. This is an amazing place. All the hype is well deserved. To truly appreciate what Sushiya can offer, you need to make reservation for the Omakase meal. Simply put, the owner and chef Vincent will serve you delicious food until you are full. You get to sit at the sushi table and get to watch Vincent create each amazing dish. Typical starters include such unusual items like cold monkfish liver. It is followed with combination of imaginative and tasty dishes. Fish served two ways; first as a sashim/sushi and the carcass/head fried to a delicious crispiness. Sweet shrimp served as raw sushi and the head fried. My favorite was actually a delicious diced fatty tuna belly in a simple hand roll. All the sushi and sashimi fish are impeccably fresh and tasty. Vincent will keep on serving you until you say stop. The meal can cost anywhere from $50-100 depending on how much you eat. It will be the best money you ever spend. According to one of my Japanese colleagues, they think it is better than most of the places in Japan. It is truly amazing that Sushiya can give you an experience you can't get even in big cities in the US. Try it, you will be amazed.

I've been here several times now since they opened. It is, by far, the best sushi spot in the area. I recently visited Minneapolis on business, and was brought to a real swanky sushi restaurant, the supposed "best spot in town" as told by the firm, it was very expensive, and had a nice ambiance, but I kept thinking to myself, "I wish I was at Sushiya right now." Long story short, I love it here. The food is on point or better than any other spot I've been to, and considering how reasonably priced it is, the bang for the buck factor is off the charts. Every time I eat here, I leave with the "I just had a great meal with great people" feeling. I try something new every time I come, but I always get the 'smoked salmon nigiri' with my meal, it's so good.

Tried almost every other sushi place around Iowa city/coralville, and my conclusion is simply there just isn't any other better place at all--or even comparable. I only wish they had larger space but the most I had to wait was 40 mins. Also the food came out in a timely manner even when it is packed, unlike three sumarai which you had to wait more than an hour. Plus the food is just too good and reasonably priced as well. Try the Taiwanese crispy chicken :)

Excellent service and food to match! We have been here twice, and the food has been excellent. I even tried squid for the first time last visit in a salad and it was well prepared and fresh. They have unique sushi rolls to try something new from time to time, and of course, they have the classics which are well made. The entrees are great as well. Yaki soba, singapore noodles, pad thai, all of it. Best of all, the wait staff and manager are the nicest people in the food business. We had a large party for a birthday on our last visit and they were very patient with us as we slowly arrived. At the end, the sushi chef sent a beautiful arrangement of sliced fruit to our table to say thank you for coming to eat. Amazing. I highly recommend,and all the other 5 star ratings agree!

A little gem tucked away in North Liberty. We tried the udon, tonkatsu, spicy tuna, hamachi, and unagi. Udon was perfectly flavored with HUGE shrimp and lots of veggies, tonkatsu light and crispy on the outside and still perfectly moist and tender on the inside. Spicy tuna roll was well balanced and just the right amount of spicy. Yellowtail was buttery and cut beautifully. All in all, well do,e. They are still in their soft opening and working out the kinks, but this is going to be the new hot spot in North Liberty! Would suggest a drink menu...and maybe some ramen with Chinese BBQ pork if the owner is reading this? All in all, a great experience that will make any other sushi places in NL sit up and take notice.

We decided to try a new sushi place in town tonight after being let down twice by our prior "go-to" place in Coralville. Suffice to say, we were very pleased. The service was amazingly gracious and the owner patiently walked me through the many questions I had about the menu. The food was wonderful and fresh. I was also pleased when my request for extra ginger was met with an entire container of the delicious root instead of the typically couple of extra shavings I usually get. (Please don't judge my tainting of the sushi with ginger and soy sauce...). We have most definitely found a new "go-to" spot.

My wife and I ate at Sushiya on a Friday night. The sushi is awesome, by far the best sushi in town. Not to mention the best service in town as well. They have a great selection of rolls and sake. I would highly recommend Sushiya if your live in or are visiting the North Liberty area! We will definitely be back soon!

It was delicious, pleasantly spicy, and a portion so large that I'm bringing home half. We also had the red bean ice cream and it was better than I've had anywhere. Definitely will return.

This is a regular place for us because the service is excellent, prices are reasonable, portions are generous, and the sushi is delicious! Excellent addition to the food options in North Liberty. Recommend the dinners that come with salad, entree, and ice cream (fun options like green tea and ginger). Worth a visit!

We're big fans of Sushi House in CR, so we've been champing at the bit for Sushiya to open in NL. Finally went for lunch today and could not be happier. Beautiful decor, clean lines, impeccably clean. We were greeted and seated quickly, attended to throughout the meal (but not hovered over). DH had the nabeyaki udon, which was great--we've had it every place locally that offers it and this was fresh and delicious with crisp veggies and lovely noodles, with a wonderfully gooey egg. The shumai were wonderful, and the sushi--so fresh! I had the sashimi sushi combo and everything was fresh and delicious. They use real tai (as opposed to several other local places that have swapped out tilapia for the snapper) and everything was gorgeous in that succulent buttery way really good sashimi is. DH had an order of tobiko (his personal fave) which was also excellent. My meal came with miso (very good, flavorful as opposed to just salty, which is what you get sometimes) and a salad (very unusual, but good--raisins and crushed peanuts, who would have thought?) as well as ice cream. Honestly, we didn't really want dessert, but were intrigued by the idea of ginger ice cream. It was terrific--we each said "you know, I'm full, but I can't stop eating this." (they also have mango, green tea and red bean--the table next to us had the red bean and it looked terrific) The menu is eclectic--it was terribly difficult for us to choose--and has a number of things we particularly love (singapore noodles, a stewed chicken dish my husband adores at SH and was thrilled to see on their menu as well). Plus, it's right on the husband's drive home from work, and of course they do take out.....so I see them getting A LOT of our dining dollars in the coming months. One final note--when we arrived, there was a huge long table of maybe 20 people. I was a little concerned, because even with a large, established kitchen, often a party that size can really throw a wrench into things and slow the service to a crawl. Despite there being only 2 sushi chefs (I don't mean to say "only 2" like that's a criticism--for a restaurant that seats 45 that is plenty, but when you get a party of 20, it changes the dynamic) and I saw that many/most of the party had sushi, our service was prompt without being rushed. Seriously, we've waited WAY longer for food at 3 Samurai (which although bigger has a much bigger staff) in fact to the point that we won't go there anymore. I was hugely impressed that that large a single party didn't seem to throw off their game. And I can only imagine it's going to get better. So excited to have them in NL!!

The sushi is good and service friendly but they need more space and faster service. They take a lot of time to get the food out. One thing that is really bad about this place is they charge you $2 extra per roll for soy paper, other restaurants in the area they charge much less (50 c) or nothing at all for soy paper. It is basically a rip off because the soy paper certainly do not coast much.

Great new place! Amazing sweet and sour sauce served w crab rangoon, however you only get 3 we ordered 2 servings but price is good so no big deal. We had chicken teriyaki and general tso. The teriyaki chicken was fried...more beading than meat wouldn't get it again however general tso was amazing! Sushi came out fast and perfect spicy scallop was tasty! Over all good for a new place working out the kinks!

Love, love, love this place. One of my new favorites. My wife and I adore going here. The food is amazing, staff friendly and attentive, and atmosphere is friendly. Never had a bad experience here. The only thing I could knock on, is the place is pretty small. Won't stop me from going there, but it does make me nervous, as more people hear about this place seating might become tight.

I have been to almost all sushi places in Iowa area. Best sushi in Corridor area I would say. The place is cozy and staff is very friendly. The Manhattan Roll and Caterpillar Roll are amazing. The eel in Unagi Don is fresh and tasty. Highly recommend.

Pros: 1. Excellent variety of the sushi menu and generally separated by cooked vs raw as well. 2. A solid set of alternative options for those who do not want or like sushi. My mom really enjoyed the coconut shrimp entree. 3. Enjoy the atmosphere. Inviting yet quaint and the back patio although somewhat small looks over a small pond. 4. Food comes very quickly and is prepared excellently. Cons: 1. Mixed bag on service. My first time there it was excellent, the second time left a lot to be desired. My third appearance will decide the ultimate trend. Lastly, not a pro or con, but they tend to be very busy right at 5 pm on Saturday, which I thought was a bit odd. They also do not take reservations on weekends.

What an amazing sushi restaurant in central Iowa! It is about (10) minutes north of I-80, and it's worth the trip. It is a smaller, local Japanese restaurant but very still tasty. The ambience was so relaxing. It was very quiet, and they played peaceful classical music. The staff was very friendly and fast. I ordered the sushi box lunch special ($9.50): that included a California roll, (3) pieces of nigiri, tempura, salad, and miso soup. The miso soup was perfect. The rest of the box was excellent! I was worried that the lunch box wouldn't be enough so I ordered another roll, but I was wrong. The sushi box lunch special was the perfect amount. They also have the nice round wooden chop sticks not the cheap square ones. Lastly, there is outside seating at the end of the restaurant past the restrooms. I would defiantly recommend!

Taking a road trip to Michigan, the husband and I decided to try something besides fast food. I yelped this place and saw it was some what close near the 80. The location is in a strip mall in West Liberty. We ordered the scallop appetizer to share. This was delicious. Please note that it is fried. I ordered the pork katsu. This fried very crisp and served with some rice. We also ordered the spicy tuna handroll. These were delicious. Right amount of rice and tuna. I wish it could have been a tad bit spicier. Our son ordered the bento box for kids. He had a sushi roll, teriyaki chicken, and fruit. His meal also came with miso soup. Service was good, but there was a delay from our appetizers to our meal. The wait staff apologized for the delay stating they were very busym. The restaurant is very small in size and intimate.

Best sushi in the area. Rice is cooked perfectly which are rare for any sushi restaurant around here. Ama ebi (sweet shrimp) was fresh, surprisingly.. They also have several dishes besides sushi. My American bf did not impress with the rolls selection but I don't mind. Friday night can be very busy, better go early!

This is my husband and my favorite place to eat. The manager knows us by name and we have always had great service and awesome food. The prices are very reasonable. I highly recommend the Squid Unami. I have always hoped to have a great neighborhood sushi restaurant and Sushiya checks all the boxes.
